This component is also called a rear axle, axle casing, axle housing, beam axle, or simply the differential carrier when referring to the assembly as a whole. Some specialists refer to it as the live axle on vehicles with this suspension type.
Support the vehicle securely on axle stands during removal and never work beneath a car supported only by a jack; the beam is heavy and can cause serious injury if it falls.
